Waste Segregation

2bin1Bag - Divide & Conquer

Segregation at source is the only sensible and easiest solution to mounting garbage problem in Bangalore and beyond. HSR Citizen Forum relentlessly campaigns and supports  SWMRT(Solid Waste Management Round Table)'s campaign to manage the solid waste management crisis in Bangalore.

Why 2bin1Bag Method?

  •  Uniform colour code provides consistency for the entire city.
  • Easy to educate housekeeping staff, maids, kids and residents.
  • Collection of segregated waste becomes more efficient
  • Creates sense of universal segregation culture.
  • Eliminates the need of plastic garbage bags.
  • Karnataka High Court, on Dec 17, 2015, mandated the "two bins and one bag system" be adopted by all waste generators in Bengaluru.

Green Bin

All bio-degradable kitchen food waste goes directly into green bin , without plastic cover lining. This waste comprises of about 60% of household waste and can be composted or converted into bio-gas.

1Bag or Blue Bin

  • The bag or blue bin is used for recyclable dry waste. This comprises of about 35% of the domestic waste.
  • Large apartments will use a bin for this waste, while individual houses will use a bag.
  • Effective secondary segregation and recycling can help recycle most of the waste that comes under this category.

Red Bin

  • The red bin is used for reject and sanitary waste.
  • This waste comprises of about 5% of the domestic waste. This contains waste that needs to be handled very safe.
  • The sanitary waste needs strict handling and incinerated scientifically. The remaining waste goes into landfill.
  • So,  if proper segregation is followed less than 5% of our waste will go to the landfill.

HCF Campaign

HSR Citizen Forum volunteers have spent lot of time campaigning door to door,  to create awareness about the harmful effect of unsegregated waste ending up in landfill. Clear guidelines were given to all the residents through direct campaign, social media and text messaging.

Where does our waste go?

  • The waste generated in HSR has clear destination.
  • Wet waste from the layout goes to KCDC(Karnataka Compost Development Corporation).
  • Dry recyclable waste goes to Dry Waste Collection Center(DWCC) for secondary segregation and recycling.
